Documents Required for PAN Card

Whenever you are applying for your Permanent Account Number or PAN, you are generally required to provide proof of your identity, your date of birth, and your home or residence address or office address in the case of firms and/or companies. These pieces of document will be used in the processing of your PAN application as well as form the foundation for your record with the Income Tax Department of India.

Proof of Identity

This is one of the most important documents that you will have to prepare as it sets the tone for the other pieces of information necessary to form a database for your Permanent Account Number. Generally, you will be required to provide the original copy of the following documents to establish your identity.

  • Certificate of Identity that has been duly signed and authenticated by any of the following: Member of the Legislative Assembly, Member of Parliament, Gazetted Officer, or Municipal Councilor
  • Bank Certificate bearing the official letter head of the bank branch where you maintain an account, duly certified with the name and stamp of an authorized bank representative or issuing officer; the Bank Certificate should bear a duly certified bank account number and the certified photograph of the account-holder

For the following documents, you do not have to bring the original copy as a photocopy will suffice.

  • Aadhaar Card duly issued and certified by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Voter’s identification card
  • Elector’s photo ID card
  • Health Scheme Card duly issued by the Central Government
  • Contributory Health Scheme photo card for former servicemen
  • Pensioner card bearing the photograph of the PAN applicant
  • Ration card bearing the photograph of the PAN applicant
  • Arm’s license
  • Any photo identification card duly issued by the Central or State Government
  • Any photo identification card duly issued by a Public Sector undertaking

As for the following documents, it is important to make sure that these have a validity of not more than 3 months on the date of PAN application.

  • Photocopy of your Driver’s License
  • Photocopy of your Passport

Proof of Date of Birth

To validate your date of birth, authorities at the Income Tax Department will require you to submit a photocopy of the following documents.

  • Aadhaar Card duly issued and certified by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Birth Certificate duly issued and certified by the Municipal Authority
  • Marriage Certificate duly issued and certified by the Registrar of Marriages
  • Domicile Certificate duly issued and certified by the Government
  • Sworn Affidavit before a Magistrate stating the date of birth and duly issued and certified by the Government
  • Pension Payment Order
  • Matriculation Certificate

In addition to the above documents, you also may have to make sure that the following documents should have a validity of not more than 3 months on the date of PAN application.

  • Photocopy of your driver’s License
  • Photocopy of your Passport

Proof of Residence Address

Your residence address is a very important piece of information on your PAN. As such, you will be required to submit the following documents in their original form.

  • Certificate of Identity that has been duly signed and authenticated by any of the following: Member of the Legislative Assembly, Member of Parliament, Gazetted Officer, or Municipal Councilor
  • Employer’s Certificate

You may also be required to submit a photo copy of the following documents.

  • Aadhaar Card duly issued and certified by the Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Domicile Certificate duly issued and certified by the Government
  • Elector’s photo ID card
  • Post office passbook bearing the complete address of the PAN applicant
  • Latest copy of the Property Tax Assessment Order
  • Allotment letter of accommodation duly issued and certified by the State or Central Government (The Letter of Accommodation should not be older than 3 years at the time of PAN application)
  • Property registration document

Additionally, make sure that the following documents should have a validity of not more than 3 months on the date of PAN application.

  • Photocopy of your Driver’s License
  • Photocopy of your Passport
  • Photocopy of the Passport of your spouse, if applicable
  • Photocopy of Depository Account statement
  • Photocopy of water bill
  • Photocopy of landline telephone bill
  • Photocopy of broadband internet connection bill
  • Photocopy of piped gas bill
  • Photocopy of your Consumer Gas Connection Card

The following documents may also be considered as proof of your residence. However, make sure that these documents are not older than 3 months at the time of your application.

  • Photocopy of bank passbook or bank statement of account
  • Photocopy of credit card statement
  • Photocopy of electric bill

Proof of Office or Business Address

For companies or firms that will require their own unique Permanent Account Number, the Income Tax Department will require you to submit a photocopy of the following documents.

  • Credit card statement bearing the complete address of the company or firm
  • Telephone bill bearing the complete address of the company or firm
  • Electric bill bearing the complete address of the company or firm
  • Depository account statement bearing the complete address of the company or firm
  • Bank account statement bearing the complete address of the company or firm

In addition to the above documents, you also may have to make sure that the following documents should have a validity of not more than 3 months on the date of PAN application.

  • Photocopy of the Office Property Tax Assessment Order bill
